Stumpf and Van Dyke Lead to Sweep of Loras

Apr 12, 2016

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team was led by a pair of complete game victories from starters Reed Stumpf and Doug Van Dyke as they swept Loras, 3-2 (7), and 5-1 (9) on Tuesday afternoon.

UD (12-10, 5-5 Iowa Conference) survived a tense, late-game situation as starter Reed Stumpf retired the final three Duhawks (8-12, 2-8 Iowa Conference) after facing a bases-loaded, no-out situation to start the top of the seventh. A hit by pitch, single, and fielder's choice led to the precarious situation, but Stumpf forced an out at home sandwiched between two strikeouts to end Loras' five-game winning streak in the series.

Stumpf (4-2) was solid in his third complete game of the season after scattering five hits, giving up two earned runs, and striking out five.

The Spartans took the early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs on four hits, including three infield singles, in the first. Runs were left on the board as UD left the bases loaded with a pair of empty at-bats to end the inning. Down 3-0, Loras stormed back in the top of the sixth on an RBI-single and plated a run on a double-play ball.

Three Spartans finished with two hits each in CF Austin McWhite, DH Tyler Lewan, and LF Jacob Evans. McWhite added two runs, and Lewan brought in two RBIs, including UD's first run of the game via sac fly.

Both teams left seven on base.

Van Dyke Shuts Down Loras to Complete Sweep

Van Dyke (2-2) hurled his first complete game of the season to give the Spartans their first two-game sweep of Loras since switching to the four-game series back in 2013. The righthanded sophomore allowed Loras' only run in the third inning off a fielder's choice, shortly after surviving a two-out bases loaded situation in the second stanza.

Van Dyke allowed seven hits on the game, including just four hits in the final six innings, while striking out five and allowing one earned run in 9.0 innings of work. He capped his winning day by striking out two in the final inning and snagging a screaming, chest-high line drive for the third and final out.

UD scored its first two runs off in the second inning off C Will Doherty's RBI-single and Lewan's score off a throwing error, but could've had more after leaving the bases loaded. The Spartans added two more in the bottom of the fourth and one in the seventh.

The Spartans were outhit, 7-6, but came through with the victory. McWhite finished with two hits, while leadoff hitter RF Jarad Clevenger and Doherty added one hit and one RBI apiece.

The Spartans improved to 47-62 in the all-time series against Loras and will face them again on the road next Tuesday, April 19 in a final two-game set.

UD hosts #25 Wartburg this Saturday and Sunday, April 16-17, in a four-game set starting at 1:00 p.m. each day.
