Van Dyke Brilliant in Complete Game Shutout of #23 Beavers

STORM LAKE, Iowa – Starter Doug Van Dyke tossed nine innings of shutout ball with nine strikeouts as the University of Dubuque baseball team won the final game of the four-game series against the Beavers, 4-0, after falling game three, 6-5, on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans (15-17, 8-12 Iowa Conference) utilized their top 1-2 punch in Van Dyke (8-6)and game three starter, Reed Stumpf (5-3), who held the Beavers scoreless through the first three innings until a six-run flurry over the final three.

Both teams recorded 10 hits in game one and four hits in game two as the Beavers won the four-game series, 3-1. The Spartans lost the three games by a combined margin of four runs.

Spartans Surrender Early Lead as Late Comeback Falls Short

Up 2-0, the Spartans allowed a three-run home run as the Beavers racked up six runs on seven hits through innings four through six to put away UD.

Leftfielder Jacob Evans led the Spartans with three hits, one run, and one RBI while centerfielder Austin McWhite and DH Tyler Lewan registered two hits each as the both teams finished with 10 hits apiece.

UD starter Reed Stumpf (5-3) took the loss despite holding the Beavers scoreless for the first three innings. The junior surrendered 10 hits, six runs (five earned), and struck out three in 6.0 innings of work.

UD rallied with one run on an RBI groundout in the top of the seventh, but left the tying run on base after a groundout ended the game.

Van Dyke Shuts Down Beaver Bats in Complete Game Shutout

UD starter Doug Van Dyke held the #23 Beavers to just four hits and no runs as the Spartans blanked Buena Vista. The sophomore lowered his team-leading ERA to 3.33 with his first shutout of the season. He was lights out after striking out nine on 127 pitches.

First basemen Dalton Garst led all hitters with three RBI, including the go-ahead two-RBI single in the top of the fifth that gave the Spartans the 2-0 lead. UD added one run in the sixth on a fielder’s choice and capped the scoring with one run in the ninth thanks to Garst’s RBI groundout.

The Beavers starter Jones (2-3) recorded a quality start after allowing three earned runs in six innings while striking out six.

UD is currently in fifth-place in the Iowa Conference standings, one game ahead of Simpson with eight IIAC games remaining. The Spartans are looking to make their first IIAC tournament since 2005.

The Spartans host Central College this Friday-Saturday, April 29-30, starting at 1:00 p.m. both days. Central (7-23, 5-15 Iowa Conference) has lost eight in a row and is currently in eighth place in the IIAC.
