Women’s Basketball Rallies Down the Stretch to Beat Duhawks in OT

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s basketball team utilized a crucial 10-0 run in the last five minutes of regulation and dominated the overtime period to beat Loras, 71-64, in overtime on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Emily Brinker scored a game-high 26 points and a team-high six rebounds and guard Abbey Meyer added 11 points as the pair teamed with Braanna Steen and Abigail Berryman on a quintet of layups that turned an eight-point deficit into a two-point lead in the last 5:16 of regulation. The Duhawks (14-7, 7-3 Iowa Conference) countered with a pair of free throw makes, but it was the Spartans who outscored their rival, 13-6, in the overtime period.

UD (7-14, 2-8 Iowa Conference) kept its Iowa Conference tournament hopes alive after scoring their final seven points of the game via 7 of 8 free throw shooting to seal the win. UD finished 11 of 13 at the charity stripe (84.6%) and outdid Loras in points off turnovers, 18-9.

After Brinker’s 41-point outburst in their previous overtime loss to Loras this season, the junior and recently anointed Hero Sports Division III Women’s Basketball Hero of the Week, is averaging 33.5 points against UD’s chief rival.

Coach Noll is now 10-9 against Loras in his tenure, but the Spartans still trail in the all-time series, 27-51.

The Spartans are two games out from Coe for the final Iowa Conference tournament seed with four games remaining. UD faces Coe this Wednesday, February 10 at 6:00 p.m. The Kohawks (13-8, 4-6 Iowa Conference) were beaten by Wartburg, 62-53, on Saturday afternoon.
