WAVERLY, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team needed a sweep the final weekend of league play to earn their first IIAC title in school history. UD would finish the final three game series 1-2 to finish runner-up in the IIAC. On Saturday the Spartans lost the opener 0-5 before taking game two 3-2.
The Spartans (23-15 overall, 17-7 in IIAC) secured the #2 seed and will get a first round bye before facing the winner of the BV/Coe game at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 11.
Thomas Kempf leads UD with a batting average of .383 and a team leading 29 RBI's. Austine McWhite trails closely behind with a .349 batting average and 21 RBI's. The two have 51 hits each, McWhite has scored 35 runs and 78 total bases. The Spartans have a team batting average of .272, a slugging percentage of .367, and an on base percentage of .370.
Pitcher Nathan Schneiderman has appeared in 14 games this season and has only allowed one run and 0 earned runs. He is unblemished on the mound, a perfect 6-0 and garnered five saves in 34.2 innings thrown. Chase Kueter has pitched 71.1 innings, the most on the team, and enters the IIAC Tourney with a 4-4 record after appearing in 10 games and an ERA of 2.40. The pair have combined for 99 strikeouts in 2017. The Spartans have a team ERA of 4.05, 265 strikeouts, 77 walks in 333 innings pitched.
The field is set for the 2017 IIAC Baseball Tournament May 11-13 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
