Baseball Moves Into First Place of the IIAC

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball teamed captured the three game weekend sweep of the Simpson College Storm on Saturday to improve to 7-2 in the IIAC. The victories earned UD a spot at the top of the conference standings. After the marathon 13 innings 5-4 victory on Friday, UD won game one on Saturday 7-0 and captured game two by a 9-5 score.

Chase Keuter earned the win after tossing eight innings and striking out 12 batters while allowing just six hits after facing 30 batters. Derek Erwin pitched the final inning, struck out one and forced a ground out. The Spartans scored seven runs off nine hits and committed two errors. Eric Hall went 2-3 and Marquis Dew was 2-4 with an RBI. Will Doherty was 1-4 with two RBI's.

The Spartans trailed in game two 1-4 through five innings before scoring runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. UD added four runs in the sixth, one run in the seventh, and three in the eighth. UD scored nine runs in 11 hits and committed three errors. Jack Lasswell was 3-4 with an RBI. Jacob Evans, Tyler Lewan, and Will Doherty all ended with two hits each. Dew and Lewan both hit a double in the win.

Doug Van Dyke threw eight innings, allowed five hits and two earned runs, struck out four and walked just two batters after he faced 31 batters. Erwin tossed a strike out and forced a ground out in his one inning of relief.

The Spartans continue IIAC play on Easter Weekend April 14-15 at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Friday's one nine inning game begins at 3:00 p.m. and Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
