Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Buena Vista

DUBUQUE, Iowa- After dropping yesterday's game and the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday 1-5, the University of Dubuque baseball team salvaged the series by taking the final game, 6-1.

The Spartans jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after back to back hits from Phillp Byrd and Austin McWhite and a Will Doherty grounded out to first base but was enough to score Bryd from thrid base. Buena Vista was able to keep UD's bats in check for the remainder of the game, not allowing more than one hit in an inning until the ninth where the Spartans had two hits.

UD held the held the lead until the sixth inning where the Beavers came up with three hits to plate two runs. Buena Vista added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth on a three run home run from Ethan McHenry.

Game two was moving quickly as the Beavers took a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth when the Spartans were finally able to rally a few hits together. Marquis Dew began the inning with a base hit right back up the middle and eventually moved to third on a single from Ryan Karrick. Next up was Gaetano Florio, who hit a ground ball to the second baseman, who bobbled it, allowing Florio to reach base and Dew to score to even things up at 1-1. Michael Salazar then hit a slow roller to the first basemen, who had no option but to get the out at first base, allowing Karrick to score and the Spartans to take the lead. The Spartans got a little help from the Beavers as a wild pitch was enough for Florio to score. 

After a quick two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Michael Salazar singled to right center to get the rally started. Phillip Byrd then reached on an error by the third baseman to continue the inning. The next batter and number three hitter for the Spartans took a 2-1 offering and drilled it over the left field fence to push the lead to 6-1. Nathan Schneiderman came on to pitch in the eighth inning, where he would escape trouble and continued in the ninth to close out the game and seal the win for the Spartans. Doug Van Dyke threw seven strong innings for UD, giving up five hits and only one run to earn the win.

The Spartans step out of conference play to take on Clarke University in Peosta, Iowa on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m.
