Baseball Starts IIAC Play With Win Over Central

PELLA, Iowa- After weather postponed Friday's game and delayed today's three hours, the University of Dubuque baseball team started off Iowa Conference play with an 8-6 win over Central College. 

The Spartans did not waste any time as Austin McWhite drove in Michael Salazar in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Central responded in the bottom half of the inning with 3 runs of their own. UD evened things up in the second inning with a double from Salazar, scoring both Lasswell and Medrano. In the fourth inning, Thomas Kempf came up with a two run single to extend the Spartans lead to 6-3. After Central cut the UD lead to one run, UD added insurance runs in the eigth inning as Austin McWhite drilled a two run home run. 

Austin McWhite continued his hot start to the season, going 4-5 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Michael Salazar, Thomas Kempf and Kelvin Medrano all pitched in two hits a piece for the Spartans with a combined five RBI's.

Reed Stumpf got the start on the mound for UD, tossing seven innings, giving up 12 hits but only five runs, three of which were earned. Nathan Schneiderman came in and shut down the Dutch in the last two innings, allowing no hits and striking out three to get the save

The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow, the first game is scheduled to start at noon.
