Bass Leads Men's Cross Country in Mount Mercy Opener

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's cross country team were led in the season opener by junior Alec Bass who won his second consecutive Mustang Gallop in it's 23rd year history.

Bass paced the field in the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:41 over the course at Morgan Creek Park. He led the Spartans to a fourth place finish out of eight teams competing and won by nine seconds over second place in the 80 man field.

Freshman Dalton Moore placed 19th overall in 16:40 for his personal best time, senior Jon Berland finished his personal best time by placing 26th in 17:01, sophomore Hunter Klose was 33rd in 17:27, freshman Jack Erickson was 38th in 17:38 to round out the Spartan Top-5 finishers.

Other runners competing were: senior Matt Zittritsch (39th in 17:39), freshman Atticus Lee (42nd in 17:43), freshman Brandon Sindt (45th in 18:02), freshman Joseph Tobin (46th in 18:02), junior Ames Helzer (49th in 18:09), freshman Jacob Heitter (50th in 18:09), freshman Tavian Rumple (56th in 18:21), sophomore Hunter Reifschneider (58th in 18:25), sophomore Tyler Miller (70th in 19:41), freshman Benjiman Smith (71st in 19:46), junior Joel Avila (72nd in 19:47). 

"Across the board we did a nice job, and we're in a good place to move up to 6k & 8k," commented head coach Geoff Gundlach. "This is a good supportive and hard working group with great things to come in 2016."
