CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The University of Dubuque baseball team claimed the rubber game of the three game series against the Coe College Kohawks, winning Monday afternoon 9-3.

Will Doherty got the scoring started for the Spartans in the second inning as he doubled down the left field line to drive home Michael Salazar and Jarad Clevenger to give UD a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

In the top half of the 4th, UD’s offense continued to roll. After a leadoff walk by Kempf and a double to center field from Salazar, Clevenger knocked in Kempf and reached on an error. Marquis Dew kept the rally going as he brought home two Spartans on a base knock through the left side.

Marquis Dew stayed hot in the sixth inning, as he drilled a three run home run to left field to blow the game open and make it 8-1 UD. Dew would finish the game going 3-5 with five RBI’s and two runs of his own.

The five through eight hitters for UD collected 10 of the Spartans 11 hits. To go along with Dew, Michael Salazar had three hits and scored three times, with Jarad Clevenger and Will Doherty both collecting two hits.

Doug Van Dyke was fantastic on the mound for the Spartans. Tossing eight innings of three hit baseball and allowing three runs, only two of which were earned. Van Dyke also struck out seven Kohawks while only walking one.  Nathan Schneidermann came into the game in the ninth inning for Van Dyke, giving up one hit but nothing else to shut down the Kowhawks and give the Spartans the series.

The win keeps the Spartans in first place in the Iowa Conference, tied with Buena Vista with a record of 9-3 in the conference. UD makes the trip to Lincoln, Nebraska this weekend, taking on Nebraska Wesleyan University beginning Friday at 3:00 p.m.
