Men's Soccer Stay in Title Hunt after 3-2 Win Over Central

PELLA, Iowa – Men’s Soccer was able to hang on and beat Central College on Saturday 3-2. The Spartans improve to 12-2 on the season.

The Spartans were on the attack early and often on Saturday against the Dutch as the Spartans put up 23 shots on the afternoon, 10 of them were on goal. Dubuque’s Matheus Santos kicked off the scoring in the game’s 13th minute, which was assisted by Gonzalo Hernandez. It was Santos’ fourth goal and Hernandez’ seventh assist of the year. Central did not take long to respond; just six minutes later they added a goal of their own to tie it 1-1, which would remain the score until halftime.

Only nine minutes into the second half, Gonzalo Hernandez found the back of the net for a goal, to break the tie. Hernandez was not done there, just 10 minutes later he added yet another goal to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead, the goals were Hernandez’ 14th and 15th of the season to go along with his seven assists. Central added a late goal in the 87th minute, but it was not enough and UD held on for the victory.

The Spartans defense was one again solid, as they held the Dutch to 12 shots, to Dubuque’s 23. On the season UD has held their opponents to 172 shots , while UD has put 213 shots up. The Spartans have also outscored their opponents 35-11 this season, 21-5 in the first half and 13-6 in the second half.

The Spartans are back in action and at home on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. against Wartburg College at Oyen Field in Dubuque.
