‌DUBUQUE, Iowa – University of Dubuque students Austin Brimeyer and Brian Goebel are ranked No. 1 on Bass Rankings’ One-Year College Team Rankings list.

Bass Rankings is a comprehensive multi-year ranking system for tournament bass anglers of all experience levels, including collegiate. One-year rankings are based on performances in the past 12 months, with a three tournament minimum. Tournaments include ACA, BASS, FLW as well as independent school opens, invitationals, or qualifiers. Rankings are updated daily.

Brimeyer, a senior from Dubuque, and Goebel, a sophomore from Gratiot, Wisconsin, averaged 934.896 points per event over the past 12 months. They have been ranked No. 1 since late July.

“It feels great to be at the top,” Brimeyer said. “We haven’t won any events yet, but we’ve consistently been near the top and that’s what has been the key for us.”

Brimeyer and Goebel are members of the UD Fishing Club. The club caught its highest placement this season.

Ten students helped the club place 12th in the prestigious 2016 Cabela’s School of the Year, competing against over 250 collegiate teams throughout the season. UD earned 1,556 points.

This year is the first time the UD Fishing Club, formed in 2011, placed in the Top 30.

“The entire team contributed to great finishes all year, and that’s what really helped us finish so well overall,” said Brimeyer, club president. “We couldn’t do it without the school supporting us. It’s awesome to see how far the team has come this year.”

The Cabela’s School of the Year program offers college anglers the opportunity to compete in collegiate fishing events across the nation. The Association of Collegiate Anglers designed the program to rank and reward collegiate fishing teams that compete with the ACA in the Cabela’s Collegiate Bass Fishing Series, as well as select national Carhartt College B.A.S.S. and FLW events.

On July 9, the final tournament of the season was held. UD Fishing Club team members Brimeyer and Goebel caught five bass weighing 13 pounds, 3 ounces to place fourth in the FLW College Fishing Central Conference on the Mississippi River at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. The team received $500. Other UD teams came in 29th, 43rd, and 61st out of 85 teams.

Brimeyer and Goebel advanced to the 2017 FLW College Fishing National Championship, which will be held early next spring on a lake to be determined.
