ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The University of Dubuque softball team sweeps the weekend at 2017 Augustana College Invitational held at Carver Field in Rock Island. On Saturday, UD stopped the host Augustana Vikings in six innings 9-0 and captured the second contest 8-1 over Ripon College. Sunday UD beat Ripon 3-0 and won 6-3 over Augustana.
Saturday, the Spartans pitching shut down the opponents in both games. Against Augie, Mackenzie Kyle allowed just three hits while fanning 10 batters. Against Ripon, Taylor Blair struck out five and allowed just one earned run after facing 28 batters.
As good as the pitching was on Saturday, the bats were just as hot. UD collected 10 hits and nine RBI's against Augie and 15 hits and 8 RBI's in win over Ripon. The Spartans were hitting the ball deep. Taylor Allard homered in the first inning and also in the seventh inning against Ripon and finished with four RBI's. Kaleigh Leddy followed Allard in the seventh and homered to centerfield. It was the Spartans first back-to-back homeruns of the season. Hailey Wang grabbed a three RBI homerun to end the game in six innings vs. Augie.
Sunday, the Spartans continued where they left off on Saturday. In the first game Kyle would toss a no hitter against Ripon. She faced 21 batters, struck out six and walked just one batter. UD ended the game with four doubles. Allard led with a pair of doubles, Dia Borden and Ellie Schneider would each have one in the victory.
In game two, Makayla Witt earned the start and allowed two runs in three innings. Randee Jackson came in for relief and captured the win pitching the final four innings and allowing one unearned run. UD scored six runs off nine hits. Nikki Blum had a double, along with teammates Courtney Markin, Allard, Wang and Gabby Marchese. The Spartans improved to 8-10 overall.
