Softball Finishes Season on the Road

PELLA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball team completed their season on Tuesday afternoon battling #14-ranked Central College on the road. UD lost game one by a score of 0-2 after collecting four hits. The Dutch scored two runs on seven hits and made two errors. In the final game, the Spartans scored two runs on six hits and committed two errors while the Dutch earned the sweep after scoring eight runs off 15 hits and committing one error.

UD finishes their season 11-28 overall and 2-14 in league play. Taylor Blair finished the year 5-7 with a 4.42 ERA after tossing 71.1 innings. Mackenzie Kyle ended with a 4-11 mark and a 2.58 ERA after throwing eight complete games and 86.2 innings. She led the team with 56 strikeouts and just 18 extra base hits. As a team the Spartans ended the year with a 3.93 ERA in 254.2 innings.

Freshman leftfielder Taylor Allard led the Spartans offense and ended 2017 with a .398 batting average, .680 slugging percentage, and an on base percentage of .438. She played and started in 34 games, led UD with 23 RBI's, 41 hits, 12 doubles, 1 triple, and five of the eight Spartan homeruns.

Sophomore catcher Courtney Markin played in 38 games and had a .293 batting average, .379 slugging percentage, and on base percentage of .339. She had 34 hits in 116 at bats and 10 RBI's. Kayleigh Leddy ended with a .288 batting average, 11 RBI's, and one homerun. Gabby Marchese collected 17 RBI's and committed just three errors at rightfield. Senior Dia Borden led UD with 16 runs scored and  Nikki Blum led the Spartans with 14 walks. The duo led with seven sac bunts each. The Spartans committed 62 errors and had a 2017 fielding percentage of .948. The Spartans left 228 runners on base and turned 14 doubleplays.
