Softball Splits Final Home Doubleheader Against Beavers

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball team was looking to finish the end of the Iowa Conference strong and captured the split on Tuesday afternoon. UD dropped the opener 2-5 before battling back to take game two by a 6-2 margin over the Buena Vista University Beavers.

UD in game one left 10 runners on base in the 2-5 loss. The Spartans fell behind early 0-3 after the first inning before mounting a final inning rally to slice into the lead after scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh. UD scored two runs off nine hits, while the victorius Beavers scored five runs off six hits.

Nikki Blum and Brandy Heraty both finished with a double and senior Dia Borden ended game one by going 2-4 at the plate Mackenize Kyle took the loss after throwing a complete seven inning game. She struck out four, walked four and allowed five earned runs after facing 30 batters.

The Spartans found their bats in game two ending the victory with six runs in eight hits. UD tied the game 1-1 in the third inning before plating four runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Spartans added a sixth run in the bottom of the sixth. Leadoff Blum finished 2-4 at bat and teammate Courtney Markin also ended the afternoon 2-4. Blum led UD with three RBI's and a double. Taylor Allard garnered one RBI off a triple and Gabby Marchese had an RBI on a fielder's choice. Kayleigh Leddy grabbed an RBI off a single up the middle in the fourth.

Taylor Blair earned the complete game victory after facing 34 batters. She struck out two, walked five, allowed two earned runs in eight hits.

The Spartans finish their season at #12-ranked Central College on Saturday, April 29 at 1:00 p.m. in Pella. Weather forecasts for the weekend appear to include rain, so changes to weekend contests could be altered later in the week.
