Spartan Men's Lacrosse Suffer Loss to Rams

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's lacrosse jumped out to an early lead 2-1 in the opening period on Wednesday night, before the host Cornell College Rams responded to capture the match 12-7.

The Spartans held pace with the Rams except in the second period when the Rams held the Spartans scoreless. Matt Penavert scored five goals while teammates Michael Jango and Hoe Furstahl each added a goal in the loss. Michael Julius grabbed an assist along with teammate Ethan Senesac. UD ended the night with 25 shots while Cornell took 46 shots. Kyle Mullins went the distance in the goal stopping 17 shots. The Spartans were nearly even in ground balls as Cornell held a slight edge 57-51. UD won 12-22 faceoffs with Josh Berry-Wingate earning 9-14 attempts. The Rams defense forced the Spartans into committing 35 turnovers. UD was whistled for eight penalties for 7:30.

The Spartans slipped to 1-2 overall and will host Trine College on Saturday, March 3 on Oyen Field at 12:00 p.m.
