Box Score

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – In a pitcher’s duel that featured only 10 combined hits, the University of Dubuque baseball team dropped their first game of the Iowa Conference Tournament to the #3 seed Buena Vista Beavers, 2-0.

Buena Vista jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning before UD starter Chase Kueter settled down. After the first inning, Kueter would go on to only allow one run and three hits over the next eight innings. Kueter struck out nine, surrendered five hits and two runs, one of which was unearned in the complete game loss.

UD came right back in the bottom half of the inning to load the bases with three walks in the inning, however Buena Vista was able to escape the jam by striking out Marquis Dew to end the threat.

The Spartans put runners on the corner in the fourth inning after a line drive base hit off the bat of Thomas Kempf and a bloop single to right field from Marquis Dew. With two outs Jack Lasswell hit the ball up the middle but the Buena Vista shortstop made a great play ranging to this left to grab the ball and throw out Lasswell on a close play at first.

The Beavers would add an insurance run in the fifth inning, collecting two hits in the innings before scoring on a sac fly to right field that ended up being a close play at the plate.

UD could only scatter five hits against the Beavers starter, Jacob Hadaway. The five hits came from five different Spartans, Kelvin Medrano, Thomas Kempf, Marquis Dew, Jacob Evans and Jack Lasswell.

UD will look to keep their season alive tomorrow in their second IIAC Tournament game. They will play at 4:00 p.m., and will face winner of Luther/Central 10:00 a.m. game.
