Spartans Dominate Crusaders in Season Opener

DUBUQUE, Iowa- The University of Dubuque women's lacrosse team kicked off their 2017 season with a 15-4 victory over the Clarke Crusaders. The victory was also the first career win for UD's head coach, Sarah Decker, who is in her first season as a head coach. 

The Spartans (1-0) scored early and often on Wednesday night, led by freshman Claire Carlson, who outscored the entire Clarke team with six goals. UD scored nine goals in the first half, four of which were scored in only three minutes of action. Breann Tjaarda netted a hat trick with three goals and an assist, while Alora Esparza and Robyn Wittkopf each had two goals of their own. In all, six Spartans scored the 15 UD goals, with assists on four of them. 

Sophomore goalie, Kaley Weir, picked up the win, while only giving up four goals and stopping four other Crusader shot attempts. The game was never in doubt as the Spartans controlled almost ever statistic, they outshot the Crusaders, 28-11, had more groundballs 29-17 and also scored on both of their man advantage opportunites. 

The Spartans are back in action on Saturday afternoon as they host Monmouth College. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m at Oyen Field
