DUBUQUE, Iowa – After giving up two runs in the top of the eighth inning to let Loras tie the game, the University of Dubuque baseball team came through in the bottom of the ninth for a 5-4 walk off win and to earn a three game sweep over their crosstown rival.

The game was on offensive struggle for the most part early on as the cold and windy conditions favored the pitchers. Loras scored first in the top of the first but UD evened the game on a Michael Salazar fielder’s choice to plate Jack Lasswell. Loras would take a 2-1 lead in the fourth off a wild pitch from UD starter, Reed Stumpf.

Stumpf went seven innings, allowing two runs while scattering seven hits, the Spartans turned to Derek Erwin in the eighth to try to maintain the lead. Erwin loaded the bases on a hit and two walks with no outs. UD brought in Schneidermann to get out of the jam but could not do so before allowing two runs to tie the game at four.

After a scoreless top of the ninth, Marquis Dew ripped a double to right center to put the game winning run at second with only out. Gaetanio Florio came on to pinch run for Dew when Jack Lasswell ripped a single to center field to score Florio on a close play at the plate and give the Spartans the victory. The hit was Lasswell’s fourth hit of the day.

UD collected nine hits and drew nine walks on the afternoon, but stranded 14 runners on base. Austin McWhite and Marquis Dew both had two hits to go along with Lasswell’s four.

UD travels to Decorah, Iowa on Tuesday for one game to finish out their weekday series against the Luther College Norse.
