Spartans Walk It off In 13th Inning

DUBUQUE, Iowa - In a marathon of a contest, the University of Dubuque baseball team were walk off winners, defeating Simpson College 5-4 on a single from Tyler Imrich.

Simpson scored two runs in the top of the first and the score remained 2-0 in favor of the Storm until the fifth inning. Gaetano Florio began the fifth inning with a perfect bunt single down the third baseline.  Jack Lasswell then doubled to put runners on second and third with one out. Austin McWhite delivered for the Spartans, drilling a no doubt, three run home run to give the Spartans the 3-2 lead.

After Simpson scored two more runs in the top of the 8th to go back in the lead, Jack Lasswell came up with another big hit for the Spartans in the bottom half of the inning. Lasswell singled right back up the middle to score Tyler Lewan and even the game up at 4-4.

The Spartans loaded the bases in the bottom of the 12th inning with no outs but lined into a double play and lined out to the first baseman to push the game to the 13th inning. After two quick outs from the Spartans in the bottom of the 13th, UD drew two walks and a hit batter to load the bases once again. Tyler Imrich hit a ball back up the middle and the second baseman fielded it on a difficult play and could not beat Marquis Dew to second base to give Imrich a single and the Spartans the walk off vicotry. 

Reed Stumpf started on the mound for UD, going 7.2 innings before being pulled after giving up the lead on the last batter he would face. Nathan Scnheiderman was terrific out of the bullpen for the Spartans, tossing 5.1 innings of no hit baseball and only walked two Storm batters and earned his third win of the season.

UD and Simpson continue the series tomorrow with a doubleheader, game one of the doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m.
