PLATTEVILLE, Wis, - The University of Dubuque track and field teams were blessed with top finishes on Holy Night, the opening night, of the UW-Platteville Invitational on Thursday, April 13. Delays due to inclement weather on Good Friday couldn't slow the competition as the very large competitive field led to more records and personal bests up and down the UD track rosters.
Spartans doubled up in hammer throw, Blaze Murfin won (44 competitors) the men's with a UD record setting toss of 54.91m/180'-2" and Tanasha Atwater won (47 competitors) women's with a throw of 53.15m/174'-6". Senior Fabiola Ortiz finished third (66 competitors) and broke a 15 year-old school record in women's 5K in a time of 17:17.71. Junior Alec Bass broke his own record in the 5K by 20 seconds after finishing in 14:49.87.
On Good Friday, Blaze Barista jumped to first place out of 22 competitors in the triple jump in 14.43m/47'-4.25". Alison Beeman won the women's 200m dash in :24.08 (66 competitors). Tanasha Atwater is still undefeated outdoors with her third win of the season in the shot put with a throw of 45'-10.75" (43 competitors). Alyssa Skrove placed second by the narrowest of margins (.50 of an inch) after leaping to a school record 5.57m/18'-3.25" in the women's long jump (38 competitors). Blaze Murfin finished fourth in the shot put (43 competitors) and broke 35-year-old school record with a throw of 16.36m/53'-08.2".
No team scores were kept. The Spartans prepare to host the University of Dubuque Invite on Friday, April 21 which begins at 3:00 p.m.
