UD to Host Fifth Annual Apex

Apr 21, 2017

DUBUQUE, Iowa – University of Dubuque will honor undergraduate student research, service learning, and creativity at the fifth annual Apex: Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity throughout the day on Tuesday, April 25, in Heritage Center.

All events are free and open to the public.

The celebration has grown from 66 projects to over 180 projects this academic year. Around 170 students, including Joseph and Linda Chlapaty Summer Fellowship participants, will present at Apex.

Jason Groth (C’07) will present a keynote titled “‘Those People’ and Their Stories: Knowing Others Through Narrative” at 10:45 a.m. April 25 in Babka Theatre, Heritage Center. Groth, a deputy state public defender with the Colorado State Public Defender in Grand Junction, Colorado, will use narratives to help others understand the importance of legal services for the poor, especially those accused of serious felony offenses. Groth, who represents adult and juvenile clients on misdemeanor and felony cases, will also discuss why people’s stories are important for understanding complex social and legal issues.

Groth earned a BA in English and a BA in philosophy at UD, a MA in creative writing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and a JD at the University of Iowa College of Law. He received the Boyd Service Award with Highest Honors for pro bono work in law school. Groth was an AmeriCorps member for two years and a legal observer with the Ferguson Legal Defense Committee. Currently, he is the vice president of the Pro Bono Project of Mesa County, Colorado, and a volunteer mock trial coach.

Undergraduate students from all academic disciplines were invited to participate in Apex.
