Volleyball Finish A Strong 3-1 at NACC/IIAC Crossover Challenge

LISLE, Ill. - The University of Dubuque volleyball team finished strong at the 2016 NACC/IIAC Crossover Challenge over the weekend by finishing 3-1 in the tournament.

The Spartans defeated Benedictine University 3-2 (20-25, 25-23, 14-25, 25-19, 15-9) in their first match and lost to Aurora University 0-3 (18-25, 14-25, 20-25). The Spartans swept on Saturday by beating Concordia-Chicago 3-0 (25-18, 25-19,25-11) and taking match over Wisconsin Lutheran 3-0.

Coach April Elsbernd has her squad playing well after finishing 4-1 on the week. The Spartans improved to 10-7 overall and have won six out of their last seven matches. UD will not be able to rest as the Coe College Kohawks journey to Dubuque to continue Iowa Conference action on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7:00 p.m. The match will be a varsity only match. Coe is 9-7 overall and 1-1 in the IIAC. The Kohawks opened league play with a 3-2 win over Loras (21-25,21-25,25-14,25-19,15-11) and lost to Wartburg 1-3 (18-25,25-19,25-11,25-13).

The Spartans lost their conference opener at Luther 1-3 (23-25, 25-22, 25-12, 28-26) and evened their record this past week with a 3-0 sweep at Loras (25-23, 25-23, 25-22).

This season the Spartans are hitting .156 and lead their opponents with over 100 service aces. This weekend the Spartans went over 1,000 digs for the season and average over 17 digs and over 1.7 blocks a set. UD is tied for 5th in the IIAC with Coe and Central, so Tuesday's match will have an impact at sorting out the middle of the league.
