Wittkopfs's Seven Goals Lead Spartans Over Loras

DUBUQUE, Iowa- Robyn Wittkopf scored seven goals for the University of Dubuque women’s lacrosse team and the Spartans held on to beat their crosstown rival, the Loras College Duhawks, 11-8.

The Spartans scored the first three goals of the game in the first nine minutes of action. After the Duhawks cut the lead to 3-1 in the 10th minute, UD went on to score the next six goals to blow open the game and make it a 9-1 Spartan lead.

The Duhawks scored with 57 seconds remaining before halftime and carried the momentum over to the second half, scoring the five unanswered goals to shrink the UD lead to 9-6. Robyn Wittkopf put an end to the run with her sixth goal of the night to put UD lead back to four goals. However, Loras would not go away, scoring the next two goals to make it a two goal game with seven minutes remaining. With just under four minutes remaining, Robyn Wittkopf capped off her big night with her seventh and final goal of the night to make it an 11-8 game and seal the game for UD.

Freshman, Claire Carlson found the back of the night two more times tonight to give her 34 goals on the season. Her 34 goals this season are second on the team behind Wittkopf’s 35. UD dominated the draw controls for the majority of the game, winning 13 of 19.

Kyra Nelson was very solid in the net tonight for the Spartans, collecting 13 saves in route to picking up her second win of the season.

UD travels to Waukesha, Wisconsin on Saturday to take on Carroll University at 1:00 p.m.
