DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s basketball team took the lead late in the second quarter and never looked back to defeat Buena Vista, 73-63.

The Spartans jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead in the first four minutes of action, but the Beavers responded with 14-2 run of their own to regain the lead. UD never trailed by more than four points before grabbing the lead with 1:33 remaining in the first half off of a three pointer from Emily Brinker.

UD used another 8-0 run to begin the second half to extend their lead to 11 and Buena Vista would not get closer than six points the rest of the game. The Spartans had four players reach double figures, led by Emily Brinker with 22 points on 6-12 shooting. UD’s point guard, Abbey Meyer had 15 points but also had a big part in getting her teammates going as she had seven assists on the night. Morgan Boer was efficient as she knocked down five of seven shots for 11 points while also hauling in eight rebounds, which was a team high. Rylee Andresen came off the bench for UD to contribute 10 points, while knocking down all six of her free throw attempts.

The Spartans forced the Beavers into 25 turnovers on Saturday afternoon, which led to seven Spartans grabbing at least one steal. Rylee Andresen and Madison Boer both had three steals, while Brinker, Meyer and Allie Biermeier all had two apiece. UD took full advantage of those 25 turnovers from Buena Vista, as the Spartans had 21 points off turnovers.

The Spartans travel to Luther College in Decorah, Iowa on Wednesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
