Women's Basketball Wrap-Up Year With Banquet

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s basketball team recently held their team banquet to put the final touches on the 2016-2017 season. 

The Spartans went 9-16 overall and 5-11 in Iowa Conference action, missing the Iowa Conference Tournament by one game. UD led the Iowa Conference in attendance, averaging 796 fans a game in the Stoltz Sports Center. The next highest attendance average in the conference was 569 fans per game. The Spartans defense was solid defending the three point line, holding teams to 30.2% shooting from behind the arc, the second best percentage in the Iowa Conference.

One of the best games of the season came at Simpson College where the Spartans trailed by as much as 25 points at one point and by 14 heading into the fourth quarter. UD took the lead with nine seconds remaining on two Emily Brinker free throws to win 83-81.

Emily Brinker was the lone senior on the 2016-2017 roster and filled up the stat sheet over her four seasons as a Spartan. During her senior campaign she was 4th in the Iowa Conference averaging 16.6 PPG, sixth with 6.4 rebounds per game and first in the conference and third in the nation for free throws, making 101-111 (91%) on the season.

With Brinker being the only senior, the Spartans return a lot of talent for the 2017-18 season. UD will return 85.6% of minutes played, 74.5% of points, 81.1% of rebounds and 82% of assists. Abbey Meyer ran the point for UD, starting all 25 games and finishing the season fourth in the Iowa Conference with 4.3 assists per game. She was also eighth in the conference in free throw shooting, making 79.2% of her free throws while scoring nine points a game. Morgan Boer averaged seven points a game throughout the season but stepped up her scoring in Iowa Conference action to average 8.4 points a game in IIAC play with five rebounds. Freshman, Cece Pope mainly came off the bench for UD to grabbed 5.2 rebounds a game and averaged 15 minutes off the bench. Madison Boer and Allie Biermeier started a combined 40 games.
