Men's Lacrosse Upended By Augustana

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men’s lacrosse team (6-6, 0-2 CCIW) lost a tightly contested battle on Wednesday night to Augustana College, 9-6.

The Spartans got on the scoreboard first after Rob Benson found Joe Furnstahl for the goal. The UD lead did not last long as Augustana would win the ensuing faceoff and scored 30 second later. UD would bounce back to take a 2-1 lead into the second quarter after Ben Gallagher found the back of the net for his second goal of the season with 3:36 left in the first quarter. Augustana would open the second quarter with two goals in a 35 second span to grab a 3-2 and the Spartans would never be able to regain the lead again. The Vikings would outscore the Spartans by a 5-2 margin in the second quarter.

UD cut their deficit to one goal when Michael Jango scored an unassisted goal less than two minutes into the third quarter. The Spartans would tie it up at the 7:45 mark of the third when Michael Jango scored his third goal of the game. However, the Vikings would hold the Spartans scoreless over the game’s final 22:45 and scored three goals of their own in that time frame to upend the Spartans 9-6.

UD goalie, Kyle Mullins, kept the Spartans in the game after recording 16 saves on 44 Augustana shots. After Jango’s hat trick, three different Spartans recorded UD’s other three goals. Ben Gallagher, Michael Julius and Joe Furnstahl each had a goal while Gallagher also added an assist.

The Spartans have the weekend off before traveling to Elmhurst College on April 11th with a start time of 7:30 pm.
