Two Spartans Participate in Prestigious Northwoods League

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque baseball team had two players participate in the distinguished Northwoods League during the 2017 summer. Doug Van Dyke pitched for the champion of the league, St. Cloud Rox and Chase Keuter pitched for the Rockford Rivets who finished fourth in their division.    

The Northwoods Leagues plays host to college baseball players from all over the United States and all levels of college baseball from Division I to Junior College. This was the 24th season of the Northwoods Baseball League, which has seen more than 160 former participants make the MLB.

Doug Van Dyke (Junior, Bartlett, Ill) saw action in four games and pitched seven innings on his way to a 0-1 record. Over those seven innings he struck out five batter, allowed five walks and three hits. After allowing three runs in his first appearance of the summer for the Rox, he did not surrender another run to finish with a 3.85 ERA. The Rox defeated the Battle Creek Bombers 2-1 in a best of three series to win the championship

Chase Kueter (Sophomore, Bellevue, Iowa) of the Rockford Rivets produced a 1-3 record on the summer with a 4.62 ERA over 25.1 innings. Kueter struck out 15, scattered 27 hits and only allowed six walks.

The Northwoods Leagues plays host to college baseball players from all over the United States and all levels of college baseball from Division I to Junior College. This was the 24th season of the Northwoods Baseball League, which has seen more than 160 former participants make the Majoe Leagues. 

The pair of Spartans helped UD earn the #2-seed at the 2017 Iowa Conference Baseball Tournament in May, after finishing the conference season with a record setting 17-7 record. UD ended the season with a 23-17 overall mark, another record for the Spartans and coach Paul Wyczawski. The University of Dubuque baseball team was one of fifty-nine NCAA Division III Schools to earn the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award for Wyczawski (2017 IIAC Coach of the Year).
