Financial Aid

LIFE Applicants' Student Aid

Financial aid is available to eligible LIFE students.  Registration for a minimum of half-time credits per term is required for the federal Stafford Loan program, and a minimum of three credits for the federal Pell Grant and the Iowa Tuition Grant.

Students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov to determine eligibility for state and federal financial assistance.

Federal and State of Iowa Grants

Federal Grants
Federal Pell Grants and federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG) are awarded to U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens who demonstrate exceptional need as demonstrated by filing the FAFSA. Awarded amounts are based on individual student eligibility.

State of Iowa Grants
The Iowa Tuition Grant is a need-based grant for Iowa residents in the amount of up to $3,500, depending on enrollment status and funding of the program by the state. A FAFSA must be received by the processing center by the deadline of July 1 for eligibility beginning the next fall semester. For more information, check the Iowa College Student Aid Commission's web site.

Federal Loans
A Perkins Loan is a low interest, need-based loan for those University students who demonstrate the most financial need. The loan fund is administered by the University of Dubuque, with limited funds available.

Federal Stafford Loan
A variable interest rate loan, capped at 8.25% made by banks/lenders to students. Annual Subsidized Stafford Loan limits are: freshmen ($3,500), sophomore ($4,500), juniors and seniors ($5,500). The Subsidized Stafford loans are need-based with interest paid by the federal government while the student is enrolled at least half-time.

Unsubsidized Stafford Loans are based on cost of attendance less any other financial aid (dependent students).  Dependent students are eligible for $2,000 in Unsubsidized Stafford Loan per year for four years.  For independent students, loan maximums are $6,000 per year for first-year students and sophomores and $7,000 for juniors and seniors. Students have the option to pay the interest while in school or allow it to accrue.

Veteran's Benefits
Veteran's benefits, including educational tuition tuition assistance, GI Bill, Post 9/11 GI Bill (Yellow Ribbon), and other chapters, are certified by the University of Dubuque Registrar's Office.
