Women's Volleyball

The University of Dubuque volleyball team continues to take strides in becoming one of the consistent performers in the Iowa Conference. The Spartans have taken top-ranked opponents into five sets and have proven a tough opponent for all they face.  

Expect to compete in several tournaments while traveling to some of the best indoor venues in the tri-state region. The Spartans are named to the All-Tournament team in nearly every tournament they compete in during the fall season. UD plays an offense which spreads the ball around giving opportunities for many student-athletes to contribute during the season. UD won the first ever Iowa Conference Team Championship with a perfect 6-0 record in 1982 and also won the team title in 1995. The Spartans have qualified for three NCAA Division III Championships.

Basierak Named First Team All-IIAC Volleyball

University of Dubuque sophomore Klaudia Basierak was named First Team All-Iowa Conference for the second straight year while junior Amy Tranel was selected Honorable Mention. Basierak finished the year second in the conference with 95 kills in IIAC only games and second overall with 366 kills. UD qualified for the IIAC Tournament for the third consecutive year.

Basierak Voted First Team Academic All-District

University of Dubuque sophomore Klaudia Basierak has been named to the First Team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District (District #8) Volleyball team. To be selected a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher and be a sophomore or above. She is an Elementary Education major with a 4.0 GPA. Basierak finished the 2013 season with a team high 366 kills, 1234 attack attempts and 14 double-doubles (Kills-Digs).

April Elsbernd joined the University of Dubuque Athletic Department in the Spring of 2009 and is a native of Calmar, Iowa (South Winneshiek High School).  She is entering her fifth season with the Spartans. 

University of Dubuque Volleyball student-athletes have earned 15 IIAC All-Academic Team honors and accounted for four AVCA Academic Team awards during her four years at the helm of the program. The program is coming off their best season since 2003, finishing in fourth place in the IIAC and receiving their second consecutive conference tournament berth. Outside hitter Klaudia Basierak, received 1st Team All-Iowa Conference honors and was chosen as the IIAC Freshman of the Year in 2012.

Prior to coaching at the University of Dubuque, Elsbernd spent one season as head coach at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa; and three seasons as an assistant coach under Jeff Meeker at Cornell College. 

She attended and played collegiate volleyball at Coe College from 1999-2002 and graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, Public Relations and Speech Communications.  She was a four-year letterwinner and earned Academic All-Iowa Conference honors in 2001 and 2002.

Elsbernd has experience coaching at numerous volleyball camps and clinics, and spent three years working with the USAV Iowa Region High Performance program, learning from and interacting with USA Volleyball coaches and USA Olympic Athletes.  She received her CrossFit Level 1 Certification in December of 2012 and has been training athletes of all ages in the Dubuque community at CrossFit Dubuque since January 2013.

In addition to her role as the head volleyball coach at UD, she is an instructor and serves as an advisor for the Spartans' Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

Elsbernd graduated with a Master of Science degree in Sport Administration from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse in 2007.

Rachel Ferguson joined the University of Dubuque in 2013 as a graduate assistant for the volleyball team. Before coming to UD, Ferguson was the starting setter at Heidelberg University from 2009-2013 helping lead the team to three Conference Championships, one Conference Tournament Championship and four Consecutive NCAA National Tournament appearances. During the 2011 season, she helped the team reach #4 in the national rankings.

Ferguson was born and raised in Brighton, Michigan where she played volleyball for Brighton High School receiving All-Region, All-County and All-Conference awards.

Ferguson received her undergraduate degree in Communications and Theatre Arts-Media with a minor in Writing in 2013 and is pursuing a Master's degree in Business Administration at University of Dubuque.
