Spartans Suffer Road Loss

STORM LAKE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Women’s Basketball team went cold from beyond the arc in a 70-58 road loss to Buena Vista (10-12, 3-8). The Spartans finished the game just 3-21 from three-point range. UD led 31-29 at the half. Dubuque is now 15-7 overall and 5-6 in the Iowa Conference.

IIAC Athlete of the Week Mollie Whiting (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) continued her torrid scoring pace with a game high 22 points. Whiting extend her steak of 20+ point games to 12 and has scored 15 or more points in 16 straight contests. The senior guard moved into fourth place on the UD scoring list with 1,552 career points and second all-time at UD with 603 career field goals made.  She is 25 made field goals away from the record of 628 by Penny Wehrs (1984-88).

Stephany Remakel (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) finished a perfect 4-4 from the field while also grabbing seven rebounds and blocking four shots.  Jennifer Fischer (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) had an outstanding  all-around game as well with seven points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

The largest lead of the night for the Spartans came with 3:02 left in the first half when a Fischer layup put UD ahead 31-19. Fischer’s layup capped a 9-1 run for Dubuque. Buena Vista would respond with a 10-0 run of their own to finish the first half with UD leading 31-29.

After a back and forth second half which had 5 lead changes and three ties, the Spartans would take their last lead of the game at 54-53 on a Fischer three with 8:24 left in the game. The Beavers would make 6 of 6 free throws in the last minute to clinch the game.

Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) had a team high five assists . Fischer and Jessica Goetz (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) each had four assists as the Spartans assisted on 17 of 25 made field goals.
