Welcome to Commencement Events for the Undergraduate and Graduate Class of 2020

The University of Dubuque looks forward to hosting graduates’ families and friends and celebrating the accomplishments of its undergraduate and graduate students. Congratulations! 

COVID-19 Restrictions and Safety
To ensure proper health and safety protocols are maintained for our graduates and attendees, graduates will be divided into two ceremonies at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 17. Graduates will be notified of their designated ceremony via email from Registrar@dbq.edu. Questions can be sent to the Office of the Registrar via email at Registrar@dbq.edu or by phone at 563.589.3176.

Inclement Weather 
Should inclement weather force the University to close, there will be no make-up date for this event. Please consult this website for any weather-related announcements.

Seating is ticketed and reservations are required. No food or beverages are allowed in Butler Hall. All attendees are required to wear face coverings in Butler Hall and Heritage Center.

Procession Begins
Students will begin procession across Wallace Common and into John and Alice Butler Hall (graduates will be walking outside - please wear appropriate shoes)

Congratulations graduates and welcome to the Alumni Family! The Office of Alumni Engagement has prepared a celebration gift for you. Following the ceremony, a reception for you and your guests will be held in the Peter and Susan Smith Welcome Center. Stop by to pick up your celebration gift, enjoy holiday treats, and take photos.

Please note that graduates receiving a master of business administration (MBA), master of arts in communication (MAC), or master in management (MM) will be hooded during the 4:00 p.m. ceremony. Graduates should bring their hood with them when they check in for the ceremony. Instructions for hooding will be provided before the ceremony begins.

You are invited to participate in a ceremony created just for you, the December Commencement Ceremony for May 2020 Graduates. We know you did not have the opportunity to walk across the stage in May, so we are excited to welcome you back to campus on Friday, December 18, 2020, to participate in an in-person ceremony.

Unable to make it to the December Commencement Ceremony for May 2020 Graduates? Mark your calendar and plan to join us for the May 2021 Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 1, 2021.

Additional Commencement Information

Undergraduate Student Commencement Apparel and Pick Up 
Beginning Friday, December 4, undergraduate students may stop into the lower level of Babka Bookstore to pick up their cap, gown, and tassel for Commencement Ceremonies. It is necessary to pre-order. Please refer to emails sent by Bookstore@dbq.edu for your pre-order.  You must do this before Wednesday, November 4.  The cost of apparel is included in your graduation fee.

Graduate Student Commencement Apparel and Pick Up
Beginning Tuesday, December 8, graduate students may stop into the lower level of Babka Bookstore to pick up their cap, gown, and tassel for Commencement Ceremonies. These items must be ordered prior to Wednesday, November 4. Please refer to the emails you received from Bookstore@dbq.edu. The cost of apparel is included in your graduation fee, and they are yours to keep.

Monday and Thursday: 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday: 8:30 a.m. – 4:45 p.m.

Graduate Check-In Day of Ceremony
Congratulations, Graduate! Here is some important information about your commencement ceremony.

  • FOR STUDENTS: Please refer to the information above for check-in times and corresponding check-in locations.
  • Provide yourself ample time to check-in with the Office of the Registrar. You will receive further instructions about the ceremony and have your photo taken.
  • Please only bring what you plan to wear or carry with you in the procession. Staff cannot secure and are not responsible for personal belongings left in room, this includes any and all items left on coat racks in the facility.
  • Graduates will process across Wallace Common; please plan your shoes accordingly.
  • No food or beverages are allowed in John and Alice Butler Hall.
  • Face coverings are required in Heritage Center.

Diplomas

  • Each graduate will receive a diploma cover from University of Dubuque President Jeffrey F. Bullock at Commencement. Graduates who have met all degree requirements will receive their diploma by mail.
  • Students who have not met their academic requirements for graduation will receive an email from the Office of the Registrar.
  • Students with an outstanding college account balance will have their diploma held in the Office of the Registrar until their account is cleared by the Student Accounts Office.

Parking
General parking is available on the University of Dubuque campus in the following locations and on adjacent streets:

  • Finley Lot at Finley and West streets
  • University Park Drive Lot at Bennett Street and University Park Drive
  • Pearl Street Lot adjacent to the corner of Pearl and McCormick streets
  • Lot across from Hardee's at the corner of McCormick Street and University Avenue

Students and guests are reminded not to park in roped off or posted No Parking Areas. For people having to park distances away, shuttle services will be provided between University of Dubuque parking lots and Heritage Center.  

Special Needs Parking/Seating
While the amount of Handicapped Parking spots will be increased for this event, parking is on a first-come first-served basis. A reserved seating section will also be available to accommodate Commencement guests who have special needs. Reservations for Special Needs Seating can be made during ticket reservation; an email to reserve will be sent to all graduates for their designated ceremony time.

A sign language interpreter has been contracted to provide “signing” services at the ceremony.

Pictures
LifeTouch Photography will take a photograph of each student with his/her diploma during the check-in process with staff members of the Registrar's Office. LifeTouch Photography will also take a photograph of each student receiving his/her diploma cover from President Jeffrey F. Bullock during the Commencement Ceremony. Dubuque Hotels/Sites
