Fitness Center
The Cottingham & Butler Fitness Center strives to offer the best services possible to the university's students, faculty, and staff. It is a safe and enjoyable place for the UD community to exercise.
- Locations/Amenities: The Cottingham and Butler fitness center is located in the Chlapaty Recreation & Wellness Center. It is staffed by student supervisors. The fitness center features cardio equipment such as treadmills, ellipticals, and bikes. Also, it has selectorized or stack loaded machines, plate loaded pieces, dumbbells, etc.
- Group Fitness: Participating in the group fitness classes is a great way to exercise, reduce stress, and meet new people at the university.

Cottingham & Butler Fitness Center and A.Y. McDonald Indoor Track
Membership Information
- Fitness Center (Membership Required): The fitness center is open to all UD faculty and staff, NICC faculty and staff, Cottingham & Butler employees, and their dependents. Spouses are considered dependents. Dependents under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent, including on the track/courts and in the fitness center. A membership must be purchased to gain access to the fitness center.
- The CRWC track and courts (not the fitness center) are free of charge for all UD faculty and staff and their dependents (who must be dependents per IRS regulations).
- NICC students, faculty and staff, along with Cottingham and Butler employees, must have a membership to access the track and courts.
- UD faculty and staff, NICC faculty and staff, and Cottingham & Butler employees must also have a membership to obtain a membership for their dependents.
- There are two six-month membership cycles spanning from January 1-June 30 and July 1-December 31.
- Memberships for UD faculty and staff, NICC faculty and staff, and Cottingham & Butler employees are $105.00 for each membership cycle. Memberships for each dependent are $55.00 for each membership cycle. There is no proration.
- Any part-time, graduate, LIFE, PA, or NICC student can purchase a membership for $80.00 per membership cycle.
- Dependents of students (i.e. seminary students, part-time students, graduate students, LIFE students, and PA students) are allowed to purchase memberships to the fitness center.
- All full-time students, including seminary students but not including graduates, have already paid their memberships as part of their semester activity fees.
To acquire a membership, refer to the steps below:
Step 1: UD faculty and staff must complete the CRWC Waiver at MyUD under Staff/Faculty Forms tab in the Staff/Faculty e-Forms box.
Cottingham & Butler employees and NICC faculty and staff need to complete the CRWC waiver.
Step 2: The membership fee will be collected online or at the student accounts office located in Smith Hall or there is a membership payroll deduction option for university faculty and staff. Membership payment will be deducted throughout the membership dates for the payroll deduction.
Step 3: Please contact the security office to activate your ID card or take the receipt you will receive from the student accounts office to the security office located in Smith Hall. For faculty and staff, the security office will ensure your ID card is up-to-date and will authorize you in the system for fitness center use. Dependents are able to email their pictures and will need to schedule a time with the security office to obtain a special ID card.
- Cottingham & Butler employees, NICC students, and NICC faculty/staff members must have a UD ID to access the fitness center. To acquire a UD ID, call Sara Lehman (563.589.3636).
- At the front desk in the CRWC, you will be asked to show your ID to use both the fitness center and indoor track (courts). The attendant will need to scan your ID card to enter these areas.
Policies
- All eligible members must present their UD ID card to the front desk.
- Proper workout attire must be worn. Proper attire includes closed-toe footwear, workout shorts or sweatpants, and a shirt. Shirts must be worn at all times. No jeans, work boots, sandals, or clothing that will damage padding on benches or may lead to injury.
- Members must bring separate athletic (tennis) shoes for use in the workout areas.
- Lockers are provided to the UD community free of charge during hours of operation in CRWC 203 and 204.
- ONLY water is allowed on the track, courts, and in the fitness center.
- Music must only be played through personal headphones. No speakers are allowed in the fitness center.
- No verbal or physical attacks on anyone or anything are permitted. Foul language and disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.
- Violating any policy will lead to immediate expulsion from the facility and possible suspension of further use.
