UD's Department of Fine and Performing Arts to Present 'Godspell'

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque's Department of Fine and Performing Arts will perform Godspell, conceived and originally directed by John-Michael Tebelak with music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, at 7:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday, March 22-23, 2024, and 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2024, in John and Alice Butler Hall, Heritage Center, University of Dubuque.

In this performance of Godspell, a troupe of eccentric players help Jesus Christ tell parables by using a variety of games, storytelling techniques, and a hefty dose of comic timing. An eclectic blend of songs, ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, is employed as the story of Jesus's life dances across the stage. Dissolving hauntingly into the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, Jesus's message of kindness, tolerance, and love come vibrantly to life through Godspell.

Joe Klinebriel, MFA, professor of theatre, is the production's director. Kristen Eby, MM, head of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, director of choral activities, and assistant professor of music, is the production's music director.

"It has been an absolute thrill to be embraced this year as the new theatre professor by the UD community, so it seems wonderfully fitting that my first directing opportunity for the program is of the beloved musical, Godspell, which celebrates the joy and power of community," Klinebriel said. "In producing this musical, the students, directors, and designers have, in fact, built our own community, and we are excitedly preparing to share our work with the extended UD and Dubuque communities!"

The cast will perform the 2012 Broadway revival version of Godspell.

"Godspell has endured for so many years because it is incredibly adaptable and invites each cast to add their own style to its essential message of love and community," Eby said. "The structure for this message is the parables of Jesus, which makes it the perfect show to lead in to Holy Week."
