Non-Degree Options for Learning at UDTS
Continuing Education Options at UDTS
A number of options exist for those interested in continuing education without seeking a degree from UDTS. Join us for a single course, a series of courses, congregational equipping options, and lectures and events.
Studying as an Unclassified Student
Unclassified students are students who pursue graduate-level credit in courses that do not count toward degree completion. Unclassified students can take up to 21 credits at UDTS without declaring a degree. Start in any term and take one or two courses at a time.
Students who are working toward or have completed a Master of Divinity degree from another seminary may join UDTS to complete coursework that may be unavailable such as biblical languages and denominational preparation coursework. Students moving into the PC(USA) from another denomination might consider the following coursework in specific preparation for ordination:
- Reformed Theology
- Introduction to Greek
- Introduction to Biblical Hebrew
- New Testament Exegesis in Greek
- Old Testament Exegesis in Hebrew
- Worship in the Reformed Tradition
- Polity and Program of the PC(USA)
- Presbyterian History and Confessions
Students that complete 4-7 of the courses above can earn a Certificate in Presbterian Studies. Learn more about the Presbyterian Studies Certificate.
Studying as an Auditor
Students desiring access to courses without the pressure of earning grades can complete courses as an auditor. Auditors apply to the seminary as unclassified students but register for classes as auditors. Auditors seek approval from faculty to complete a course without a grade. Instructors usually request that auditors complete portions of the class like keeping up with the weekly reading, lectures, and class discussions, but do not require completion of class learning assessments such as essays or exams. Auditors complete courses at a reduced tuition rate. Auditor seats are available on a first-come, first-served limited basis.
Studying in the Congregational Equipping Program
The Congregational Equipping program prepares laypersons for leadership in their local congregation in preparation courses that do not earn academic credit. Learn more about Congregational Equipping.
Studying in Local Learning Communities
The Madison Learning Community offers courses for-credit and not-for-credit in person in Madison, Wisconsin. Students that complete all six courses taught in the learning community can earn a certificate in Bible and Ministry. Learn more about Learning Communities.
