UD Performing Arts and Campus Center and Design Build Structures Receive National Award

Nov 5, 2012

The University of Dubuque's new Performing Arts and Campus Center and Design Build Structures (Peosta, IA) were awarded the People's Choice Award in the commercial category in competition with 47 other entries from worldwide locations.  Companies that use the steel detailing program SDS/2 by Design Data were eligible to submit entries to be judged.

UD's Performing Arts and Campus Center, nominated in the commercial design category, placed in the top 6 of all designs submitted.  The nominations were then opened up to all SDS/2 users for a vote, and UD's project received the People's Choice Award among all entries.

Three general criteria went into determining overall rankings:  aesthetics of the project, complexity, and steel tonnage used.  "This building is not your average square box design, and it's varieties of angles made it an architectural challenge with its convex and concave roof slopes, and radius walls," stated  Kyle Theisen, Design Build Structures project manager /detailer." Within the building, these features create some visually unique and handsome spaces for theatre seating, gathering spaces, offices as well as practice and staging areas.

Other entries in the competition included the Florida Marlins baseball stadium, the San Diego Library dome, and 45 other facilities that are located worldwide.
