UD Raises the Stakes for Iowa College All-State Honor Band

Nov 10, 2014 | Kristi Lynch

Last year, for the first time in the school’s history, five University of Dubuque band students were selected for membership in the 2013 Iowa College All-State Honor Band. This year, however, UD has doubled that number, and ten students will travel to Ames, IA to represent the University at this year’s event.

The 100-piece Honor Band ensemble, made up of students from seventeen different colleges and universities, rehearses and performs at the Iowa Music Educators Association (IMEA) conference in Ames, IA each November.  Students work with a renowned conductor, this year Dr. Myron Welch (conductor emeritus, University of Iowa), and will present a concert in the Josephine Tope Community Auditorium attached to the Nevada Community School in Nevada on Saturday, November 22 at 2:30 p.m.

University of Dubuque wind ensemble students selected to participate include: Kelly Hogan, flute, of Cedar Rapids, IA (first-year, computer graphics); Brianna Kennedy, oboe, of Farley, IA (sophomore, music); Molly Zogas, clarinet, of Wheaton, IL (sophomore, criminal justice); Jocelyn Odegard, clarinet, of Dubuque, IA (junior, business); Lydia Snyder, clarinet, of Manitowoc, WI (first-year, biology); Brenna Heying, alto saxophone, of Elkader, IA (sophomore, pre-nursing); Elisa Thode, French horn, of Lake Zurich, IL (first-year, biology); Shaquille McAlman, trombone, of Lithonia, GA (sophomore, aviation); Kaytie Jess, tuba, of Bellevue, IA (first-year, pre-nursing); and Wade Gibson, percussion, of Dubuque, IA (junior, environmental science).

“Last year it was an honor to be able to represent UD at the state level,” said Nicholas Bratcher, director of instrumental music at UD.  “I’m extremely proud of all of our students for their hard work.  We are consistently striving for higher performance goals – and this is one example of many more to come.  Great things are happening at UD!”

This year marks the 21st annual Iowa College All-State Honor Band.
