Men's Basketball Capture Second Tournament Title

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The University of Dubuque men's basketball team improved to 4-0 overall on Saturday and captured their second tournament title in back-to-back weekends. The Spartans trailed to the host Northwestern (Minn.) in the opening half of action by a 25-28 score, but UD would out score the hosts 44-29 in the second half to capture the 20th Annual Northwestern University ACR Homes Tournament title by a score of 79-67.

The Spartans capped off the weekend with 4-5 starters finishing the night in double digit scoring. Gage Heffernan sank 6-7 free throw attempts to finish with  a game high 19 points and 11 rebounds. Brandon Ferguson and Andre Norris both added 16 points and Jacob Mohlis had 14 points. UD would use just four bench student-athletes and would out score Northwestern 9-4. Once again the Spartans worked the ball inside and finished with 42 points in the paint. 

The score was tied six times and swapped another nine times. The Spartans would take advantage in second chance points 21-15, despite being out rebounded by a slim margin 34-36. UD sank 29-61 attempts from the field (47.5%), and connected on 14-17 attempts from the free throw line (82.4%). 

The Spartans will take a few days off for the Thanksgiving holiday before continuing their road trip to Colorado Springs, Colo. for the Colorado College Tournament on Nov. 28-29. UD will host the Clarke University Crusaders on Dec. 4 for their final home game of 2014 before starting the conference season in January 2015.
