Women's Lacrosse Open Conference Season With Dominating Victory

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque opened the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) with a commanding 21-6 victory over the Carroll University Pioneers amid a cold wet, sleeting night under the lights of Oyen Field on Tuesday.
UD jumped out quickly and led 10-0 before the visiting Pioneers scored their first goal at 16:44 of the first half and ended the opening half of play with a 14-4 lead. Robyn Wittkopf led the Spartans with a season high seven goals in the win. Judy Borah added four goals and Bridget Schirmers and teammate Breann Tjaarda both finished with three goals each. The Spartans dominated the game with 41 shots, 19 ground balls, and held a narrow edge in draw controls 18-12.
Chelsea Hawkins captured the decision after stopping three shot attempts, all in the second half. UD kept the Pioneers goalie busy with 41 shots and seven saves. Breann Tjaarda led UD with 10 draw controls.
The Spartans improved to 3-2 overall and are 1-0 in the CCIW. UD will continue a busy week when they continue a home stint with Wartburg College on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. and Cornell College on Sunday afternoon.
