Sep 5, 2015

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Outside hitters, Klaudia Basierak and Amanda Reetz, were named to the Colorado Classic All-Tournament teams after leading the University of Dubuque volleyball team to their first two wins of the year. The Spartans faced  Franklin College (Ind.), University of Texas-Tyler, Colorado College, and Carleton College (Minn.) over the two-day tournament taking place on Friday and Saturday.

Game 1 BOX SCORE
vs. Franklin College [Lost 2-3]
Senior Klaudia Basierak led the Spartans with 20 kills and six digs as UD dropped their first five-set match of the year (25-11, 25-14, 21-25, 25-16, 13-15).

The Spartans (0-3) fell to 1-1 all-time against Franklin despite solid performances from defensive specialist Kristin Wright, who chipped in with a game-high 39 digs, and setter Alyssa Cose, who dished out 44 assists. Collectively, the Spartans took two sets from Franklin after posting a season-best hitting percentage of .214 in set one and following up with a .258 mark in set four. It wasn't enough to overcome a .039 hitting percentage in their three set losses.

Game 2 BOX SCORE
vs. University of Texas-Tyler [Won 3-0]
After posting a season-best hitting percentage of .277, the Spartans (1-3) took down University of Texas-Tyler (25-19, 25-12, 25-12) in straight sets to earn their first win of the year.

Basierak's game-high 12 kills led a group of four Spartans with five or more kills each. UD totaled 28 combined kills and hit .377 in the final two sets to take control and down the University of Texas-Tyler (0-1) in their first ever meeting. Despite a shaky first set (.091 hitting percentage), UD made quick work of the Patriots and took home the victory in a mere one hour and five minutes.

Setter Hannah Zieser paced the Spartans with a game-high 29 assists while freshman Johanna Steggall and junior Kristin Wright collected 10 and 11 digs, respectively.

The Spartans complete their four-match series at the Colorado Classic tomorrow, September 5, at 1:00 p.m. (CST) time against the host Colorado College, followed by Carleton College at 3:00 p.m. (CST).

Game 3 BOX SCORE
vs. Colorado College [Lost 0-3]
The Spartan offense was stymied as they hit -0.29 en route to a 15-25, 18-25, 15-25 defeat at the hands of undefeated host, Colorado College, on Saturday afternoon.

Basierak paced the team with seven kills, but couldn't right the ship after the Spartans opened the first set with a -.086 hitting percentage. UD (1-4) kept pace with Colorado during the second set after forcing nine ties and finished with 14 over the entire match.

Zieser collected a team-high 19 assists and Wright posted a team-high 13 digs.

Game 4 BOX SCORE
vs. Carleton College [Won 3-2]
The Spartans (2-4) came out firing on all cylinders after hitting a season-best .246 in a back-and-forth, five-set victory over Carleton, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 23-25, 15-11 in their fourth and final game at the Colorado Classic.

Leading the charge once again was Basierak, who totaled a season-high 24 kills and finished the game hitting .296. Cose was the offensive and defensive catalyst after dishing out 47 assists, collecting six kills, and scraping up 13 digs while outside hitter, Karrah Davis, boasted a team-high 18 digs.

UD would not be denied in the decisive fifth set after limiting the Carleton (3-3) attack to a .040 hitting percentage when it mattered most.

It was an entertaining affair that featured 24 ties and nine lead changes with the Spartans coming out on top for their first win over Carleton in six tries.

The Spartans head to the UW-Oshkosh Pizza Hut Classic in Oshkosh, Wis. for a pair of games next Friday, September 11.
