Bass and Murfin Break UD Track and Field Records at UW-Platteville

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - Sophomore Alec Bass smashed his previous school record in the 5000m with a a 32-second personal record of 15:02.33 while freshman thrower Blaze Murfin broke a 14-year school record in the weight throw (17.0m/55-9.25) at the UW-Platteville Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

No team scores were kept at UW-Platteville, but the Spartans saw a number of athletes compete.

Bass finished sixth overall in the 5000m field of 43 runners and shattered his previous school record of 15:34.96. His 5000m time of 15:02.33 ranks second in the Iowa Conference after only his fourth race of the indoor season.

Murfin, who received the Iowa Conference’s Male Track Performer of the Week award after breaking the school shot put record a week ago, broke the previous record of 16.86m/55-3.75 on his first attempt of the day. Murfin missed out on first place by 0.5". He now leads the Iowa Conference in both shot put and weight throw. The freshman placed fourth in the shot put at Platteville with a toss of 51-0.75.

Senior distance runner Payton Nevills placed second in the 3000m run with a time of 9:09.43, just two seconds behind the winner.

Jumping specialist Kebba Bojang competed for the first time since January 16 and placed runner-up in the triple jump with a mark of 13.79m/45-3. His mark of 46-8.25 set back in December in the Spartan Duhawk dual has him out front in the Iowa Conference by a wide margin.

Sprinter Najee Toomer placed fifth in the 60m with a new personal record of 7.06 and the 4x400m relay team of Jamey Foster, Izaiah Lavatai, Aaron Ofosu, and Hunter Klose finished fifth in 3:31.65.

The Spartans host the UD Indoor Invite this Friday, February 19 at 4:00 p.m.
