PELLA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's cross country team braved the heat at the Central Dutch Invite as Alec Bass and Payton Nevills led the Spartans to a fifth-place finish on Saturday morning.

The Spartans placed fifth out of eight teams as fellow Iowa Conference opponents, Loras (21 points) and Central (79), took home first and second, respectively.

With the temperature hovering around 92-94 degrees, Bass (6th, 27:32) and Nevills (8th, 28:09) kept their cool as they collected a pair of Top-10 performances. Bass was coming off his first career win last week at Mt. Mercy as Nevills made his 2015 debut.

The pair were followed by sophomore Jack Lindsay (32nd, 30:40), junior Jon Berland (33rd, 30:41), and sophomore Ames Helzer (37th, 31:05) as they rounded out the scoring. Freshman Riley Holst (45th, 31:48) and senior Jordan Murray (47th, 31:54) completed the Varsity squad.

"Alec had a nice run today once again, but we need definitive three through seven runner to emerge, step up, and keep developing," said Head Coach Geoff Gundlach. "We have some freshmen and returners alike that have to and will keep pushing for our scoring spots."

The Spartans hit the road as they head to the Grinnell Les Duke Invite next Saturday, September 12 at 10:00 a.m. UD will run on the Oakland Acres Golf Club.
