Epic Comeback By Women's Soccer Spoiled in Overtime at No. 21 Luther

BOX SCORE
DECORAH, Iowa - Down 2-0 late, the University of Dubuque women's soccer team fell in overtime, 3-2, at No. 21 Luther College after connecting on a pair of goals by Shelby Nicholson in the 83rd and Emily Meeker in the 87th to force extra time on Wednesday night.

Neither team attempted a shot the brief overtime period until Luther's golden goal in the 93rd minute from way outside the 18-yard box to win it. The Spartans (9-4-1, 1-3 Iowa Conference) were the only team this season to force No. 21 Luther to overtime and nearly broke the Norse's 10-game winning streak.

Luther (12-1, 3-0 Iowa Conference) led the shot count, 17-11, and corner kicks, 7-2, en route to goals in the 42nd and 73rd minutes. UD trailed in shots, 9-4, at the break, but tied the Norse with seven in the second half. None were more important than the final four shots that set up the rally.

Nicholson's first goal of the year in the 83rd minute came off a deflected shot on goal by freshman Lauren Cangelosi inside the box that sparked the Spartans biggest comeback of the year. A similar situation ensued minutes later as senior Katie Lynn's shot was saved and returned for a score by Meeker.

A pair of clutch saves in the 90th minute by freshman goalkeeper, sophomore Katie Silberstein, pushed the game to overtime. Silberstein played brilliant after racking up a season-best eight saves, the single-game high by any of UD's three goalies this season. The Solon, Iowa native played her first match since September 29 and came into the game with just 45 minutes in goal.

The Spartans dropped to 7-12-1 all-time against the Norse and saw their two-game winning streak in the series come to an end.

UD looks to right the ship on Senior Night coming up this Saturday, October 17 at 4:00 p.m. against Buena Vista (3-10, 0-4 Iowa Conference). The winless Beavers are scoreless in conference play.
