Fast Start Propels Gonzalez to IIAC Player of the Week

DUBUQUE, Iowa –Junior Gonzalo Hernandez scored three goals, distributed two assists, and took home his third career Iowa Conference men’s soccer Offensive Player of the Week award after leading the University of Dubuque men’s soccer team to a 2-0-1 record in their first three games.

In both Spartan wins over Illinois Wesleyan, 2-1, and Hamline University, 3-2, Hernandez provided the game winning goal and one assist in each game. Hernandez’s clutch goal in the 84th minute tied the game up against Macalester and assured a 1-1 tie after double overtime. All three goals and two assists by Hernandez either tied the game or gave the Spartans the lead.

Thanks to his three goals this season, the Madrid, Spain native moved into sole possession of ninth-place all-time in career goals with 16. Hernandez sits two goals behind Chadwick Newquist (’08) for eighth-place on the all-time list.
