Hernandez and Lynn Named September UD Student-Athletes of the Month

Gonzalo Hernandez and Katie Lynn led their respective teams to hot starts and a pair of NSCAA regional rankings in September.

Junior men’s soccer forward, Gonzalo Hernandez, and senior women’s soccer forward Katie Lynn, were recently named the University of Dubuque student-athletes of the month after leading their teams to regional and national rankings to begin the season. 

Hernandez, currently the Iowa Conference’s leading goal scorer with 10 goals, led the men’s soccer team to a 6-2-1, 1-0 IIAC start in the month of September after scoring seven goals (three game-winners) and dishing out three assists.

The Madrid, Spain native got off to a hot start and scored one goal in each of the first three games with two game-winners. After being held scoreless for three straight games he came out firing against Elmhurst (Ill.) on September 22 with his first career hat trick (three goals) on four shots in a 3-0 win. The victory over Elmhurst began a streak of three straight shutouts to finish out September.

Hernandez was awarded two Iowa Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts and gave the Spartans an NSCAA North Regional ranking (No. 8) for the first time since 2012.

Lynn, currently the Iowa Conference’s leading shot taker at 6.4 shots per game, was the offensive catalyst for a Spartan women’s soccer team that attained a No. 24 NSCAA national ranking and a 7-2-1, 0-1 Iowa Conference record in September.

The Fox River Grove, Ill. native continued her torrid pace of game-winning goals after serving up five of her seven September goals as game-winners in addition to her three assists. Lynn overtook the school record on September 29 from Megan Siepler with 14 career game-winners.

Lynn’s scored three straight game-winners from September 9 to 15 in one-goal wins at UW-La Crosse (1-0), vs. Lawrence University (1-0), and at Monmouth College (2-1). A 2-1 win over North Park on September 19 left UD with a 5-1-1 record and a No. 24 NSCAA national rank.

Both teams continue their Iowa Conference season with a trip to IIAC perennial power, Luther College, this Wednesday, October 14 for a doubleheader starting at 4:30 p.m.
