Martinez Defeats Defending IIAC Champ as Women's Tennis Falls

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Sophomore Arantxa Martinez took down the defending Iowa Conference Flight "A" Singles Champion to claim the University of Dubuque women's tennis team's only win in an 8-1 defeat against Coe on Wednesday afternoon.
It was a grind-it-out affair, but Martinez (4-0 singles) outlasted Coe's No. 1 singles player, 7-5, 6-4. The last time these two squared off was in the Iowa Conference Flight "A" Singles Championship this past spring when Martinez, the No. 1 overall seed, got clipped by sophomore Haley Resnick, in a three-set classic.
Earlier in the match Resnick and her partner got the better of Martinez and Marissa Joers in a narrow No. 1 doubles bout, 8-5. The tandem of Megan Ranney and Mariah Scott fell in No. 2 doubles, 8-4, after a tough match.
The Spartans host Central and Simpson College this Saturday, September 12 at 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively.
