BOX SCORE
DUBUQUE, Iowa – With the final CCIW tournament spot on the line, the University of Dubuque fell short in a 12-6 defeat to Elmhurst despite three goals from attacker Tyson Svoboda.

Both teams came in to today’s game tied for the fourth and final spot in the CCIW standings with the Spartans looking for their first-ever win over the Bluejays (5-11, 2-3 CCIW).

UD (2-11, 1-4 CCIW) matched Elmhurst with four goals in the second half, but dug themselves an early hole after getting down 5-0 in the game’s first nine minutes.

Svoboda, who led the Spartans with 20 goals in 2016, and Jacob Olsen each notched one as UD went into halftime down 8-2. Svoboda and Efrain Rodriguez made it interesting netting the first two goals of the second half. Rodriguez nearly shifted momentum after taking a breakaway turnover the distance and finishing on the other end.

Elmhurst’s ensuing 4-1 run put the game out of reach for a Spartan team that hung tough despite being outshot, 43-17.

UD collected more ground balls, 34-30, behind a game-high eight from midfielder Collin Perry, then the Bluejays and saw goalkeeper Kyle Mullins (2-9) tally 14 saves on the day.

Midfielder Joshua Berey-Wingate converted 11 of 18 faceoffs on the day along with four ground balls and two assists.

The Spartans complete their first season under new coach Kasey Burst and graduate only two seniors from this year’s squad.
