Oct 17, 2015

BOX SCORE
DUBUQUE, Iowa - Sporting a 1-0 lead for most of the second half, the University of Dubuque men's soccer team scored three goals in the final five minutes in a dominant 4-0 win over Buena Vista on Saturday night.

The Spartans (10-3-1, 4-1 Iowa Conference) took control early on and outshot the Beavers, 29-2, including 11 shots on goal. Senior Billy Belmonte got the Spartans started with a 48th minute goal, 18 yards out from the left side thanks to a Gonzalo Hernandez assist. Belmonte notched his seventh career goal after being honored pre-game with five of his fellow seniors.

Despite his team's dominant effort through the first 85 minutes, Hernandez orchestrated the rout with his 11th goal of the year in the 85th minute from the left side. The junior proceeded to assist sophomore Leo Lenth in the 88th minute off a shallow shot from the right side and freshman Malcolm Phillips in the 89th right inside the goalie box. It was Hernandez's first career game with three more assists, adding to his hat trick against Elmhurst earlier this season.

Overall, the Spartans missed on a handful of opportunities inside the opposing box for most of the match. Belmonte's bicyle kick off the crossbar provided their best scoring opportunituy in a scoreless first half with the Beavers (5-10, 0-5 Iowa Conference) where they outshot Buena Vista, 13-0.

UD improved to 9-3-3 in the all-time series and have gone 9-0 under Head Coach Brad Johnson.

The Spartans welcome No. 11 UW-Whitewater to town this Wednesday, October 21 at 7:00 p.m. for arguably their toughest matchup of the year.
