BOX SCORE

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's soccer team hosted the Elmhurst College Bluejays at Oyen Field Tuesday night and battled to a 3-0 victory. A serious stoppage of play happened in the opening 15 minutes when two players collided in mid-air and near midfield, an extended 20 minute break to take care of the injured student-athletes would zap the intensity of the match. The opening period ended with a quieted scoreless half.

The Spartans awoke in the second half and would score three goals in the final 45 minutes of action. Gonzalo Hernandez scored the first goal of the match at 64:28 in the upper left corner. He would break free at 85:29 and snuck his second goal of the night into the lower right corner after slicing through the Bluejays defense. Hernandez captured the hat trick in the final minutes off a corner kick. He took the corner and curved it into the middle of the goal, but it was blocked by the keeper near the top of the goal post. It was a few short seconds before the referee blew his whistle and ruled it a goal as Spartan fans waited anxiously for a decision.

Twenty Spartans would see action in the match, but it was Leo Lenth and Hernandez who finished the night with four shots. The Spartans kept the Bluejays keeper busy as UD ended with 14 shots with 12 being on goal. Riley Jensen made four saves and earned the shutout for UD. The Spartans have allowed just three goals in the opening half this season.

The Spartans improved to 4-2-1 and will open Iowa Conference play this weekend when they will host the Wartburg College Knights at Oyen Field on Saturday, Sept, 26 at 4:30 p.m.
