DUBUQUE, Iowa – Freshman Blaze Murfin won the hammer throw and placed second in two other throwing events to lead the University of Dubuque track and field team and senior Troy Krueger tied for fourth at opening tournament for the University of Dubuque men’s golf team as both took home Iowa Conference Player of the Week honors.

Murfin won his first career outdoor event, the hammer throw (51.82m/170’0”), as the Spartans finished third at the Last Minute Invite hosted by Coe on April 3. The Dallas City, Ill. native also finished runner-up in both the discus (46.53m/152’8”) and the shot put (15.38m/50’5.5”) in UD’s outdoor season opener.

Murfin leads the IIAC in both the shot put and discus after competing in a meet that featured five IIAC schools.

The IIAC Indoor Shot Put champion majors in aviation.

Krueger shot an even par 72 in less than ideal conditions in the rain-shortened Illinois Wesleyan Invitational on Friday, April 1. Due to the cold and wind, the Spartans season-opening tournament was shortened to one round. The Maple Park, Ill. native tied for fourth, two shots off the lead, as UD tied for ninth as a team in the field of 21.

Through seven rounds that includes the 2015 fall season, Krueger’s 72 was his season-low as he sits third on the team with a 76.71 average. It was his second Top-5, and third Top-10 of the season.
