Ortiz Shines at Augustana Invite

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Junior Fabiola Ortiz placed 13th of nearly 600 runners at the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational hosted by Augustana College to lead the University of Dubuque women's cross country team to a 26th place showing out of 50 teams on Friday night.

In a meet that featured some of the top competition in the Iowa Conference and a mix of Division I and Division II schools, Ortiz impressed after finishing in 22:55. Ortiz, coming off a school record of 22:26 a week ago, was the second fastest of 28 Iowa Conference runners and paced the Spartans to 752 points. 

Ferris State University, a Division II institution, took home the team title with 125 points while Wartburg (153 points) placed second. Other IIAC foes included Loras, who finished eighth with 279 points, and Simpson, who ended up 11th after totaling 339 points.

Backing up Ortiz was Kiersten Wenthold who crossed the line in 86th place with a time of 24:22. Finishing third for the Spartans was sophomore Kayla Kinateder who placed 206th with a 25:35. Rounding out the Spartan Five was sophomore Kristin Mackenburg (239th, 27:19) and sophomore Jaclyn Roeder (242nd, 27:25). UD's indoor 300m record holder, sophomore Katrina Pagel, was the sixth Spartan runner to cross the line with a 30:31, good for 313th. Sophomore Bobbi Jo Helgemoe (333rd, 34:40) completed the Varsity team.

The Spartans head to the Warrior Invite hosted by Wisconsin Lutheran next Saturday, October 3 at 11:00 a.m. Last year at the Warrior Invite the Spartans earned their highest finish of the season after placing runner-up out of 14 teams.
